Stone Brewing Company

For the last dozen years Stone Brewing Company has been driven by a bigger-than-life personality. Its beers are big and aggressive. Its marketing has a sharp edge. This is a company that has earned an international reputation for its huge hop bombs while taunting beer drinkers by proclaiming “You’re not worth” right on its own bottles. From the start Stone followed its own path. The result of over a dozen years of big attitude- Stone has garnered a place as one of the fastest growing craft breweries over the last decade as well as gaining a cult-like status among beer fans and homebrewers.

Arrogant Bastard Ale

This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory – maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer with give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps your mouthing your words as you read this.

Stone IPA

“India Pale Ale” by definition is highly hopped and high in alcohol – you’ll find our Stone India Pale Ale to be true in style with a huge hop aroma, flavor and bitterness throughout. If you’re a hop-head like us, then you’ll love our Stone India Pale Ale! Medium malt character with a heavy dose of over the top hops! Generous “dry hopping” gives this beer its abundant hop aroma and crisp hop flavor.

Smoked Porter

Stone Smoked Porter is dark, rich and complicated. A porter is substantially darker than a pale ale, but not as black or opaque as a stout. Our Smoked porter has a captivatingly deep mahogany color, complimented by silky dark tan head. Rich, full bodied and robust. Smooth, with chocolate and coffee-like flavors balanced by the subtle “smoky” character of just the right amount of peat-smoked specialty malt.

Best With: This hearty porter is a great accompaniment to a wide array of Mexican dishes, burgers, steaks, sausages, ham, smoky flavors and chocolate desserts.

Pale Ale

Our flagship ale, Stone Pale Ale is our Southern California interpretation of the classic British pale ale style. Deep amber in color, Stone Pale Ale is robust and full flavored. A delicate hop aroma is complemented by a rich maltiness. This is an ale for those who have learned to appreciate distinctive flavor. Stone Pale Ale is great by itself, or with food that requires a beer of character.

Best With: This English Pale Ale pairs nicely with clear broth based soups, salted almonds, game birds and all sorts of seafood. This brew also offers a nice balance to spicier Indian and Cajun foods.

Imperial Russian Stout

Brewed in the authentic historical style of an Imperial Russian Stout, this beer is massive. Intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate, this brew goes where few can – and fewer dare even try. The style originated from Czarist Russia’s demand for ever thicker English stouts. Expect our version of this mysterious brew to pour like Siberian crude and taste even heavier!

Best With: Hot molten chocolate mud cake is the ideal pairing for this beer, however it works beautifully on its own as a digestif.

Ruination

A liquid poem to the glory of the hop.

Best With: This IPA’s generous hop character makes it an ideal pairing with spicy foods such as barbecue, dry-rubbed ribs, or ethnic cuisine such as curry based Indian food, wasabi based Japanese dishes, or spicy Thai entrees.

Old Guardian

Bright and clear in appearance. The color of a great single malt, but the lower alcohol of the OG throws the light in different ways than a scotch. Light and citrusy aroma. Almost like a barley wine cured orange peel. The flavor is hoppy as all get out. Young and brash. And to my palate quite delicious! Noticeable alcohol…quite clean. Mouth feel is almost light on the palate (in a barley wine sorta way) that might not suggest the alcohol level.

Best With: Primarily thought of as a digestif, it turns out that barley wines have an affinity to lamb, venison and wild boar. Classic cheeses such as English and Vermont cheddars as well as aged Gruyeres from Switzerland. Caramelized desserts as crème brûlée and crepes as well as a good vanilla ice cream can finish a wonderful evening of food and beer.

Lucky Basartd

“Lukcy Basartd is a dry-hopped meeting-of-the-Bastards in an in-the-fermenter-blend of Arrogant Bastard Ale and Double Bastard Ale – with a perfect balance of the essence of OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale. All in all, one awesome Bastard.

Lukcy Basartd Ale will be released in November and should be available in many of the enlightened locations where the liquied Arrogance is typically found.

This is a ‘once only’ special release commemorating the 13 year anniversary of when Arrogant Bastard Ale was first released upon the unsuspecting public. That is, ‘once only’ unless we decide to make it again.”

ABV: 8.5%

Oaked Arrogant Bastard

To celebrate the first anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale in 1998, we unleashed it’s big angry brother, Double Bastard Ale. Every November since then, the Double Bastard has been released in limited quantities. In 2004 Arrogant Bastard Ale and Double Bastard Ale got a third cohort when we released OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale in 3 Litre bottles. 2006 marked the third year of OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale, and a surprise – we crammed, forced, shoved and cajoled the OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale into itty bitty tiny little 12oz bottles. It did not go willingly. Some Stone peeps got hurt. More emotionally, than physically, but it was definitely both. Well, here we are on our fourth year and we’ve got one more surprise… You’ll be able to get OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale in sixpacks year ‘round starting on August 20th, 2007!

Stone Brewing More Brown Than Black IPA

Appearance: Deep brown, a bit hazy, with tan foam.

Aroma: Whoa! This beer is all about, resiny, piney, dank and citrusy hops! The first shot is intense blend of pine and orange rind, and then as your sense of smell just starts to recover, the dankness and resiny herbaceousness come through with hints of grapefruit. This is a powerful hop blend!

Taste: The hops also dominate the flavor of this beer. Orange and grapefruit rind take center stage in the flavor, followed by, you guessed it: piney / resiny notes. The beer has a modest body – not sweet at all – and has a lingering bitter, drying end. Beyond the bitter end there are light hints of roasted malt and chocolate in the finish.

Overall: The hop character in this beer is unique and very pronounced. Galaxy is a newer hop variety from Australia that we think has strong tropical fruit and stone fruit characteristics. Citra and Delta are newer American hop varieties – Citra possesses strong citrus and dank flavors, while Delta has a milder profile with melon and berry notes. And of course Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand has its intense namesake’s white wine notes along with – surprise! – more dank notes. They all blended together well in this beer, a tribute to one of our favorite styles.

Japanese Green Tea IPA

A wonderful spirit of camaraderie, cooperation and mutual support exists in the world of craft brewing. We have harnessed this spirit fully in the crafting of this special collaborative brew dedicated to the resilient people of Japan who are bravely endeavoring to overcome the tragedy of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. We tip our brewing hats to the quiet elegance and humble sophistication of Japanese culture through the judicious addition of Japanese whole leaf green tea to this big, bold, spicy and herbal IPA. Cheers, Japan!

This is the first collaboration beer brewed as a fundraiser. All sales proceeds are donated to Japanese tsunami relief programs.

Cherry Chocolate Stout

San Diego homebrewing duo Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard submitted their Cherry Chocolate Stout for this year’s Stone March Madness Homebrew Competition and AHA Rally, taking top honors out of 40 entries that were judged. As a result, they earned the opportunity to make a dramatically scaled up version with Brewmaster Mitch Steele on the 120-barrel Stone Brewing Co. system.Once the beer was decided on, an additional brewer had to be selected to complete the collaboration. Deciding to bring in John Trogner, Head Brewer of Pennsylvania’s famed Troegs Brewing Co.

“The taste is that of a very smooth stout, with an intense tart cherry beginning and a cocoa smoothness dominating throughout the palate. The tartness from the cherries balances out the smooth sweetness, and the addition of cacao and vanilla beans add intricate layers of chocolate and vanilla to the flavor profile. Definitely a beer to savor slowly and evaluate as it warms and changes in your glass.”
