Ommegang

Welcome to the Ales of Brewery Ommegang, where the beer isn’t overhopped or overhyped. These Belgian-style ales are functional art, crafted to make your dining and drinking experience something to behold.

Below you will discover the five portraits of authentic Belgian ale. You will learn how these brewers use a broad palette of high-quality ingredients such as Bohemian hops, Belgian-specialty malts, and an array of traditional spices to create a masterful collage of Belgian-style brewing.

Brewing as an Art

Before light bodied lagers and mass produced Pilsners ruled the earth, brewers used a variety of yeast strains, spices, grains, and artisanal methods to produce rich, heady brews full of robust aromas and exciting flavors. For years, the tiny nation of Belgium, situated at the crossroads of various European culinary traditions and agricultural regions, has been at the center of this brewing heritage, where hundreds of breweries produce countless styles and varieties of beer.

Partaking as a Passion

At the end of the twentieth century, American tastes were rapidly evolving to encompass a rich and expanding multicultural cuisine. Home brewing was becoming a popular hobby, and sales of cookbooks and cooking magazines were growing at an astronomical rate. It was obvious: America was hungry (and thirsty) for something different.

Brewery Ommegang

In October of 1997, not far from the birthplace of baseball, ground was broken for what was to become America’s most unique microbrewery. Based on traditional Belgian farmhouse architecture and set on a former hop farm in upstate New York, Brewery Ommegang was born with the philosophy that truly unique ales must be built from the ground up. Now brewing five award-winning Belgian-style ales and offering daily tours and tastings, plus a full calendar of special events, Brewery Ommegang is the place where brewing is an art and partaking is a passion.

Rare Vos

Named after a Brussels bar made famous as the starting point for bicycle and pigeon races, Rare Vos Amber Ale is also a great place to begin your virtual taste test. As you pour, you’ll notice the beautiful coppery-amber color and the rich creamy head. Lift the glass to your mouth and enjoy the aroma of spicy orange blossoms. Taste and the pleasant mellow flavor of caramel malt glides easily into a dry, hop finish. Once you’ve finished, start again (after all, this isn’t a race).

Intended for the cafe as well as the dinner table, Rare Vos is an Amber Ale of medium color and strength with an ABV of 6.5%. Three Philosophers

Cynics can’t believe it, Epicures hail it a sensation, and Pythagoreans just can’t add up what makes this luscious blend of rich malty ale and cherry lambic so delightful. It might be the flavor of dark chocolate and cherry cordials; it could be the way it acquires wisdom and grace in the cellar. Maybe it’s a conundrum. What’s your theory?

The essence of wonder is a unique and masterful blend of strong malty ale and authentic Belgian Kriek. Ommegang philosophers deduce that this powerful marriage of cherries, roasted malts, and dark chocolate will only achieve more wisdom and coherence as it broods in the dark recesses of your cellar. This Belgian-Style Dark Strong Ale is 9.8% ABV and pairs well with roasted meats and game. It is excellent with extremely rich cheeses and desserts, especially chocolate!

Chocolate Indulgence

Chocolate Indulgence comes with a thick tan head of foam resting on top of the rich onyx-colored liquid. The aroma immediately speaks of dark chocolate and dark malts. The gentle herbal nose of Perle hops compliments the darker notes, making the beer savory to the senses. The taste continues with the intense Belgian dark chocolate gliding across the tongue; starting sweet up front but giving way to rich cocoa flavors at the back. Through it all, a subtle fruitiness from our special Belgian yeast gives the beer brightness otherwise foreign to a beer style normally associated with gray foggy skies.

Bière De Mars

Ommegang Bière de Mars is a Belgian-style amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in – Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness. Also dry-hopped, this new ale continues our exploration of using Brett for secondary fermentation in limited-release beers.

Bière de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry-hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering. At 6.5% ABV, Bière de Mars offers easy quaffing; it also pairs nicely with spicy foods such as barbecue. BeerAdvocate.com users give an overall rating of Very Good. Ratebeer.com users rate it at 95%.

A spring 2009 Yankee Brewing News tasting panel sampled new releases from a range of craft breweries and wrote this about Ommegang Bière de Mars: “A spicy nose that smells fabulous, similar to bière de garde. The panel loved the smooth flavor and perfect carbonation. There were lots of “oohs” and “ahhs” for this one. Extremely drinkable, not too sweet and finishes dry. Best beer of the evening

Beautiful, rich and smooth, roasty and malty throughout, Seduction offers balanced chocolate-cherry notes, a bit of caramel sweetness, and a long, slow finish. Seduction is welcoming and warm-hearted, gently hopped and harbors no bitterness, leaving only a lingering glow.

BPA

Ommegang BPA is our interpretation of a true Belgian-style Pale Ale. Taking inspiration
from both sides of the Atlantic, we feel we’ve brewed up something completely unique.

BPA is brewed with 5 specialty malts and generously- though not excessively -hopped
with three hops: Columbus for bittering, three additions of Celeia for aroma, then
dry-hopped with Cascade. BPA is primary fermented and bottle-conditioned using our
signature house yeast.

Copper-golden in color with entrancing effervescence, BPA forms a substantial, fluffy
white head, giving off aromas of tropical fruit and citrus. Noticeable herbal notes and
bitterness from the hops never overpower the balanced malt backbone and allow the
estery qualities of our yeast to shine through.

We feel the result is quite remarkable. Giving a nod to the fine Pale Ales brewed in
America today, though never forgetting its classic Belgian roots, BPA is exceedingly
refreshing and well-balanced. At a modest 6.2% ABV this beer is perfect as the weather
warms and the days lengthen, BBQ’s become more abundant, and friends look to gather
outdoors more. BPA lends itself to a wide array of food pairings; seamlessly with lighter
fare such as salads and seafood, locally made cheeses and meats with spicy pickles,
and never forget about your burgers and grilled sausages!

As part of our Specialty Release Program, new in 2010, BPA made a short, widespread
appearance accross the country. It will continue to be available in the greater Chicago
and Cooperstown, NY areas as a bit of a study to investigate its viablility as a year-round
brew. We are wishing it the best!

Aphrodite

In Greek mythology, Aphrodite rises from the foam of the waves of the sea, enchanting all who see her, and inciting thoughts of love and lust where ever she goes. We could hardly say it more eloquently. Our Limited Edition Aphrodite Ale is ethereal, intriguing and mysterious – as the Goddess Aphrodite must have been. Aphrodite has champagne-like carbonation, much as the foam of the waves of the sea. Plus enchanting flavors with whispers of raspberry and pear, and hints of funk and tartness created by the Brett yeast. The refreshing dryness comes from the unusual combination of Ommegang and Brett yeasts, and incites feelings of love and thirst, though we don’t know about lust. Grains of paradise are infused into the nectar, and when poured Aphrodite is crowned with a luxuriously shimmering rose-pink head.

Adoration

Ommegang announces our first Strong Winter Ale, named Adoration, becoming available from mid-October through December, all across the US.

Ommegang Adoration, brewed in the authentic style of Belgian winter, or noel beer, is dark, strong, malty and assertively spiced.

At 10% abv Adoration is not a lightweight beer, and is best sipped before a roaring fire, or on a sleigh ride over the hills to Grandma’s house. (But let someone else drive.) It would also be a tasty accompaniment to dark roasts and wild game. Even at the strong abv, the beer is well-balanced and not at all hot or fiery. The dark malts give it lush, malty flavors and aromas, strongly complemented by the five spices, including coriander, cumin, mace, cardamom and grains of paradise. Hopping is modest, as befits such a beer.

Ommegang Adoration is the first in a series of special beers to be released every two months through the end of 2010. Look for Chocolate Indulgence in January-February and then an entirely new group of beers throughout 2010.

Adoration is available on draft and in 750ml bottles only. You’ll need to look for it in your local retailers or taverns, as we have released it all to meet huge demand, and we none left to sell through our stores, either online or at the brewery. Let us know what you think.
